Case Study: Emergency response key to vital transport link repair works

Project overview

Damage to two retaining structures located below an active rail line created an immediate stability risk. A specialist contractor was appointed to carry out remedial works, but the proximity to live rail infrastructure introduced significant safety and operational challenges.

Continuous monitoring was required to support safe delivery and maintain rail operations throughout the project.

Critical infrastructure at risk

The rail line is a key transport route, making any disruption highly sensitive.

Failure of the retaining structures increased the risk of ground movement and potential landslip, requiring urgent intervention to protect the integrity of the track and surrounding environment.

Stabilising the embankment

To mitigate the risk, stabilisation measures were implemented, including the installation of ground anchors and reinforced mesh systems.

These works allowed for the controlled removal of the damaged structures while preventing collapse into adjacent areas and maintaining overall slope stability.

Monitoring and specialist support

With works taking place close to live rail, even minor movement had the potential to impact safety.

A comprehensive monitoring system was deployed to provide continuous, real-time data on track and embankment conditions. This ensured that any movement could be detected early, enabling immediate response and supporting compliance with rail safety requirements.

Solution

A range of monitoring technologies was implemented to support the project, including sensors capable of measuring changes in track geometry and ground movement.

Data was transmitted in real time to a secure online platform, allowing stakeholders to remotely access live site conditions and make informed decisions throughout the works.

The system was designed and installed within a tight programme, ensuring monitoring was in place ahead of critical construction activities. Ongoing technical support was provided to maintain performance and reliability throughout the project lifecycle.
