Providing vital bridging in major rail improvements
Project overview
As part of a major rail infrastructure upgrade, a new bridge was required to accommodate overhead electrification systems and support the introduction of more efficient, modern trains.
The existing structure did not provide sufficient clearance, meaning full replacement was necessary while maintaining both rail and road operations.

The challenge
The removal of the existing bridge and construction of the new structure required a temporary solution to maintain traffic flow.
With the works taking place over an active rail line, disruption had to be kept to an absolute minimum.
A key constraint was a short possession window, meaning the temporary bridge needed to be installed safely and efficiently within a matter of hours.
Supporting infrastructure upgrades
Bridge replacement formed part of a wider rail modernisation programme, focused on improving capacity, reliability and sustainability.
Upgrading infrastructure to accommodate electrification required careful planning and precise execution to ensure continued operation of both transport networks.
Rapid temporary bridge installation
To maintain access and minimise disruption, a temporary bridging solution was deployed within a tightly controlled possession period.
The structure was pre-assembled off-track in advance, allowing for rapid installation during the limited access window.
Solution
A modular temporary bridge system was engineered to meet the required span and loading criteria, including provision for both vehicles and pedestrians.
The structure was assembled adjacent to the railway ahead of installation, reducing on-site time during critical operations.
During the possession, the bridge was launched into position using a controlled rolling method, enabling safe installation within the restricted timeframe.
This approach ensured continuity of road access while allowing essential rail works to progress without delay.
Outcome
The temporary solution enabled safe and efficient bridge replacement works while maintaining transport links and minimising disruption to rail services and the public.
By combining advanced planning with rapid installation techniques, the project was delivered within strict operational constraints.
